Sixth Sample went from "I didn't even bother trying to do licensing" to two-click activation

Sixth Sample
Indie developer
Sixth Sample is Aapo's outlet for plugins he wish existed, and built himself.

Sixth Sample creates professional-grade audio plugins that deliver results rivaling industry heavyweights, but in a package that doesn't take itself too seriously. Aapo built the company from scratch and had to figure out how to sell and license audio software when general-purpose tools aren't built for it.
"More headspace to focus on things you actually enjoy doing."

The previous setup
Before Moonbase, Aapo ran Sixth Sample on WordPress paired with a third-party e-commerce solution designed for general digital goods. The approach worked initially, but it came with serious friction. In his words: "The main friction with this approach was having things scattered behind multiple different WordPress plugins, and due to the main e-commerce plugin being a more general solution to selling digital goods online, making a plugin-focused and automated system was very tough."
Licensing was the biggest gap. Integrating automated license distribution and validation into his WordPress ecosystem felt fundamentally too difficult. Aapo's assessment was blunt: "Licensing I didn't even bother trying to do, as integrating the whole system to an automated license distribution and validation just didn't seem that attainable."
The decision
Aapo didn't run a formal evaluation of competing platforms. He didn't need to. "Moonbase's plugin-centered approach was something I didn't find anywhere else," he explains. But the decision wasn't purely about the product architecture. "Being able to talk directly to the amazing developer (Tobias) and even suggesting features is something I appreciate greatly." That level of access and responsiveness shifted his thinking from evaluating a tool to joining a partnership.
The migration
Customer migration was the part Aapo was honestly most scared about before moving to Moonbase. Switching platforms means risking customer data, authentication, or purchase history. The Moonbase API made the process surprisingly manageable. "As long as you're able to export the customer list from your previous system, you should be good to go." A fully transparent transfer with all passwords is trickier, which Aapo didn't end up doing, but Tobias confirmed it's possible if needed.
Implementation
The activation flow is where the real payoff is visible to customers. When someone buys a plugin through the embedded storefront, they download the installer for their operating system from the Products tab. After running the installer, scanning for new plugins in their DAW, and opening the plugin, they hit the activation screen. Both online and offline options are guided by on-screen instructions.
For online activation, as Aapo describes it: "It's literally two clicks, and the plugin gets automatically activated through the Sixth Sample website without the user having to do anything (provided that they're already signed in to their account after making the purchase)."
The feedback from customers speaks for itself: "The pain-free activation flow has been getting a lot of praise from the customers, so kudos to the Moonbase team!"
What changed
The immediate change is clear: Aapo moved from a fragmented system to one built specifically for plugin distribution and licensing. But the bigger shift is operational headspace. No more context-switching between WordPress plugins. No more workarounds for licensing. No more friction in the customer experience. "Everything runs, and has been running smoothly ever since I started using them."
Where they are now
Aapo is focused on what he actually enjoys doing: creating audio tools that he wishes existed. "Currently I'm working on quite a few exciting projects, some solo, and some with other amazing people in the industry. Even though the industry has been changing a lot lately, creating audio tools that I wish existed is as exciting as ever."
His one-sentence summary of the Moonbase experience: "More headspace to focus on things you actually enjoy doing."
